On this day in 1869, the Reconstruction constitutional convention was in progress . . .

On January 2, 1869, the Texas constitutional convention of 1868-69 re-convened in Austin after taking off New Year’s Day. Former Union general (and future Texas governor) Edmund J. Davis presided over the convention. The Constitution of 1869 that eventually resulted did not have a long shelf life–it was eventually superseded by the Constitution of 1876 that still forms the basis of our Texas Constitution in effect today. edmund davis-p01
